What is the meaning of Baptism?

Baptism represents Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection ("Christ died for our sins... He was buried...And He was raised on the third day." – 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 "For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with Him, you were raised to a new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead." – Colossians 2:12). It represents my new life as a follower of Christ ("We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life." – Romans 6:4). Baptism is like a wedding ring: It’s the outward representation of the commitment you made in your heart to God. Baptism shows that you already believe, but doesn’t make you a believer. Baptism does not “save” you. Only Christ saves you by grace through faith in Him.

Baptism Isn’t Essential for Salvation

When Jesus hung on the cross, He hung between two thieves. One of them mocked Jesus, but the other put his faith in Jesus. Jesus responded, “today, you will be with me in paradise.” (Luke 23:43) The man didn’t have time to get baptized before he died, but he was still going to be with Jesus in paradise.

Baptism Isn’t Optional For Believers

Although it’s not essential for salvation, baptism is still foundational to our faith. It’s an important step for believers. Jesus Himself was baptized as an example for us. Mark 1:9 records, "At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan."

Baptism is a Proclamation of the Gospel

In 1 Corinthians 15:3-4, the apostle Paul wrote, "Christ died for our sins... He was buried...And He was raised on the third day." When we get in the water, we die to ourselves, are buried with Christ, and are raised to walk in the new life God has called us to. It is the good news of Jesus on display for everyone to see. Colossians 2:12 says, "For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with Him, you were raised to a new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead."

How do you know if you need to be baptized?

If you’ve given your heart to Jesus but have never been baptized, that is your next step. Or if you were baptized before you were saved or understood what you were doing—you did the right things but in the wrong order—and baptism is a way for you to proclaim the Gospel’s power in your life today.

I want to baptize my child. How would I go about that? Baptism is a sacred milestone in the life of those who made a personal decision to follow Jesus. For the youngest members of our church family, we host Starting Line, a class designed to partner with parents in leading kids to know God personally and follow-through with baptism. For those who are looking to have their newborns baptized, the Christ Fellowship Kids Pastor at your campus is available to tell you more about our Child Dedication Celebration.
