Day 2

READ: Jonah, Chapter 2

From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He said:

“In my distress I called to the Lord,
    and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,
    and you listened to my cry.
You hurled me into the depths,
    into the very heart of the seas,
    and the currents swirled about me;
all your waves and breakers
    swept over me.
I said, ‘I have been banished
    from your sight;
yet I will look again
    toward your holy temple.’
The engulfing waters threatened me,
    the deep surrounded me;
    seaweed was wrapped around my head.
To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
    the earth beneath barred me in forever.
But you, Lord my God,
    brought my life up from the pit.

“When my life was ebbing away,
    I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
    to your holy temple.

“Those who cling to worthless idols
    turn away from God’s love for them.
But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
    will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
    I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”

And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

DEVOTIONAL:

Have you ever been so desperate that you cried out to God—ready and willing to do anything? Jonah knows how this feels. After Jonah gets thrown overboard, he finds himself in the most unusual God-appointed space—a belly of a whale. God ordained this specific place to protect Jonah from drowning. The whale was not God’s punishment, it was God’s provision. A lot of times when we're in a dark, confusing, or lonely place, it feels like God's punishing us, when He's actually providing for us.

Finally, in Jonah’s darkest moment, his desperation led him to renew his vow to God.

Jonah wasn't referring to Nineveh—He was referring to something much bigger. Jonah was returning to his vow and commitment when he became God's prophet. It's not what he would do—it’s who he would be. He's saying, God, I am all yours. I will do what you want me to do. I'll go wherever you want me to go. I'll say what you want me to say.

You might feel desperate, but desperate moments can become defining moments. Like Jonah, our darkest hour can also become our most pivotal hour. As we surrender our hearts fully to God, He can show us how to course-correct and walk in the fullness of His plan.

PRAYER:

God, thank you that you are the God of second chances. Thank you for all the times you’ve extended your grace in my life. Help me to fully surrender to you and your plan. Amen.
